My little girls (ages 6 and 7) have been watching me knit for years. They’ve asked to learn, and I tried to teach them, but they found it frustrating when their fingers didn’t do what they wanted. So we took a break from actual knitting and they spent some time learning the basics on a Knitting Mushroom (like this one) and a Knitting Fork, both very good for children who aren’t quite ready for two needles.
But this last week, they determined to learn to knit like Mama, so I set aside my own project and we sat together, one at a time (this was key for me, I cannot teach two children how to knit at once) and they learned.
In through the front door,
Around the back,
Out through the window,
And off jumps Jack!

And the littlest Little? Well, I don’t think he’s quite ready to take up his needles to knit, but he did enjoy having them do battle with a ball of yarn.
