The Link Between Driving and Baskets

I’ve been revisiting making rope baskets this week.  I’ve made a few here and there, and have put a few in my shop (and need to restock). I love the meditative quality of stitching spirals.

One of the baskets I made recently is a type of harvest basket.  It’s large-ish and has comfortable handles for carrying over your arm or with your hands, and the handles collapse to the shape of the basket for easy storage and display.   I’m hoping to make a few more for the shop this weekend and get better pictures because I really like this basket.

The other basket I was playing with is a convertible back pack/shoulder bag. It was claimed by my youngest as soon as I finished.  I have a few things to adjust and modify (and two more to make for the little girls who each want one to match their brother).  It was a lot of fun to try to figure out how to make with just a length of rope. As much as I like the harvest basket, I LOVE this one.  I’m not sure what to call it though – a gathering basket?

Why is sewing rope baskets linked to driving?  Well, as I said, stitching them is very quieting.  It’s a great way for me to refocus and breathe and I needed that this week.  But for a very good reason!  My two Middles both passed their driving tests on the same day!  We have two new drivers in our home!  I’m so excited for the flexibility it will give us, and for the extra time I’ll get to be home rather than driving them to and from all their activities, but oh! I have two new drivers!  Please drive safe, because my babies are on the road now, too.
