Going to the Fair

If you’ve never been to Maine, or to one of Maine’s fairs, you are missing a treat. There are two that we try to go to every year. One is the Blue Hill Fair (we missed it this year), and the other is the Common Ground Fair.

The Common Ground Fair is held pretty close to home, and it is, for us, the harbinger of autumn. Every year, Friday is free for school groups and homeschoolers, and it has become our traditional day to attend.

The fibers are beautiful.

The face and hand painting is always fun.

The animals are fun to see and pet.

Lunch while watching the sheep herding dogs.

A walk through the marketplace and a peek at the gardens.

And always, always, ending the day with sliding (or surfing) down the grassy hill on cardboard.

A visit to the nearby Alpaca farm and a peek at the new baby alpacas (this baby, only 2 weeks old).

I’ve grown to love this fair and what it celebrates – home grown, home made, local, fresh, organic.  If you’ve never had a chance to go, put it on your calendar for next September. I’m sure we’ll see you there.

  1. Hello,
I just posted a bit about the fair too. Saw your comment at SouleMama and thought I would see where you are from. We just put an offer on a home in Freedom, ME. We also have 7 children – the two oldest married (no grandchildren yet) and the other 5 we homeschool.
Perhaps, we can connect at some point.

    1. How fun! Freedom isn’t far at all from us. I popped over to your blog and see that it was your first time at the fair – so much to see, isn’t there? I hope your offer is accepted. Post and let me know.
