Well, Hello There

It’s been a long while, hasn’t it?  I thought about making this post a “What I did this summer” essay.  Remember those from school?  I might still do that, but I wanted to check in and say that we’re all alive and well and, well, so very, very busy.  I really don’t like the “busy” part, but that’s the season I’m in.

We began our homeschooling year last week.  It’s my 20th year as a homeschooling mom.  Isn’t that crazy?  It’s so strange to be schooling with no babies, or toddlers, or preschoolers to try to keep occupied as we work on lessons. I still have to keep a rather tight schedule though.  Because of that schedule, our week went pretty smoothly.  I have a couple of modifications to make to it, but the schedule seems to be working. I’ll probably post a little about what we’re doing later.

Those are our First Day of School pictures above – Zach and Maddie are heading out to class, the Littles are having a post breakfast snack while I try to find a book that I needed and misplaced. ( It was right where it was supposed to be.)

This year, Silas is in a combination of first and second grade.  Last year we said he was in Kinderfirst.  So this year he’s in… first-ond?  Secondst?  Hmm.  We had to Officially register him with the state this year (Maine compulsory school age begins at 7), so we’ve registered him for first grade.  We can always combine grades for him later if we feel that he’s able to move ahead.

Sophie is in fourth grade (though she’s a very young 4th grader), and Emma is in 5th.  Maddie is officially in 12th grade.  She had enough high school credits to graduate early last year, but she really doesn’t want to grow up quite yet and is embracing a Peter Pan attitude towards becoming an adult, at least for this year.  She’s playing soccer with the local high school and is taking a full course load through the local community college, so we say she’s in 13th grade.  With 34 college credits completed, she’s also a sophomore in college.  It’s the perfect example of why assigning a specific grade to someone isn’t always the best or the easiest.  Zach is also a sophomore in college and he has a full course load as well as his part-time job.

In addition to the classes, the girls are all continuing ballet and Maddie, Emma, Sophie and Silas are participating in soccer.  There’s a whole lot of planning to make sure everyone gets to the places they need to be on time.  Planning meals has become an absolute necessity.  I’m working on a meal plan that rotates through our favorite meals so that shopping is a little easier too.

So this is what we’re up to.  What’s happening in your world?
